More AC Motor Manufacturers
An AC motor, or rather an alternating current motor, is a device mechanism consisting of a stator with a coil connected to an alternating current supply and producing mechanical energy.
What is an AC Motor?
The stator remains stationary while the rotors rotate about due to the mechanical force generated.
AC motors are usually single-phase or three-phase, depending on the intended task. The three-phase motors are mainly used for high power conversions, and the single-phase motors for small power conversions.
How an AC Motor Works
Overall, the working principle of an AC motor depends on magnetism. A magnetic field is generated when an alternating current is driven through a coil.
A current is then induced, and a rotary magnetic force is generated. This force causes the rotor to spin about, generating a mechanical force that can be harnessed to machines and simplify the work.
Types of AC Motors
The different types of AC motors include:
Single-Phase AC Motor
These motors are used when there is only a single phase supply of electricity. This type is known to be less expensive and smaller in size. The rotor in this type of motor rotates with respect to the sum of the two rotating fields. The torque produced is equal and opposite to the resulting force.
Polyphase AC Motor
These alternating current motors have two- or three-phase supplies but operate as single-phase motors. A polyphase motor produces about twice as much as a single-phase motor, and the electric current is constant, unlike the pulsating current of the single-phase motor.
Synchronous AC Motor
In a synchronous alternating current motor, the rotation of the shaft is at a frequency similar to the current supply. The speed of the rotation of the synchronous motor does not depend on the load. This type of motor is not self-starting, unlike the common self-starting motors, which have the power supply connected directly to the stator.
Asynchronous AC Motor
This type of motor uses the induced current in the rotors to produce a rotary motion. All power for the rotor comes from the induction that occurs in the stator. The rotor induction is due to the proximity electromagnetic field in the stator. The absence of brushes or slip rings in the model makes this motor more efficient and reliable when compared to other motors. It is commonly used for heavy-duty tasks because of its simplicity and ruggedness.
Hysteresis Motor
The hysteresis motor is made up of semi-permanent magnet material. The torque is generated by the magnetic flux dragging behind the external magnetizing force. The hysteresis AC motor has an inside core of non-magnetic material and a smooth cylindrical stator without windings.
Applications of AC Motors
AC motors are used in numerous day-to-day applications. They are usually used when a constant driving force or motion is required. Additionally, the motors are perfect for projects requiring very high performance and resultant torque. The motors are commonly used in power tools, inside disk drives, clocks, pumps, blowers, fans, conveyor belts, washing machines, and other industrial areas.
Advantages of AC Motors
The design of alternating current motors is simple, and the whole mechanism is generally not very expensive. Maintenance costs are relatively cheaper and do not require very high expertise. The AC motor has a favorable output power factor and comes in lightweight mechanisms. AC motors also depend on power consumption to produce mechanical energy as they do not leave any residues behind.
A summary of the advantages of AC motors denotes and includes:
- Cost-efficient
- Controllable acceleration
- Simpler designs
- Less vibration and noise
- More productive and efficient
- Various available models
